Microsoft just completed its annual work trend index report, it has some great suggestions and some eye-opening statistics of how employees are feeling about their relationship to their job. One of the key takeaways from Microsoft’s survey is that leaders need to “make the office worth the commute” and this includes helping employees feel safe coming back into the office. The full report can be found here, the survey highlights an interesting juxtaposition between what employers are requiring and how employees were feeling about their work relationship.
Did you know:
50% of companies that employ knowledge workers are planning to require their employees to come back to work in the office in 2022,
55% of manufacturing companies are planning the same,
54% of retail companies will require in-person work (even for knowledge workers)
53% of consumer goods companies will require employees to come back to the office.
From the employee perspective, it is not clear that workers are eager to return to the way things were pre-pandemic. Employees are re-thinking their relationships with their employer, and are looking for different things. It is no longer just a bigger office or more money that matters to employees:
53% of employees say they are more likely to prioritize health and well-being over work. This is more true of parents (55%) and women (56%).
24% of millennials and 40% of generation z (article here) are planning to quit their job sometime in the next two years.
25% of employees are concerned about germs in the workplace. (Source: Bradley Corporation Healthy Handwashing study here).
So, what can employers do to make it enticing for employees to come back, and keep their people from looking for other roles?
Think about how you can include your employees in the plan for returning to the office. Employees can help shape a solution that works for everyone.
Evaluate roles that are eligible for hybrid work and look for ways to provide flexibility to your employees, especially the younger generations who are so critical to our future. Can you embrace (where possible) hybrid work, and if so can you build policies to be inclusive of those that are not yet comfortable being in person?
Help workers feel safe about coming back to work. For example, are you actively discouraging people from coming to work sick, what are your cleaning and disinfecting policies, are you cleaning frequently enough, what are you doing to regularly disinfect high touch points, are you providing sanitation stations to every employee, do you routinely perform disinfectant fogging if there is an outbreak at your facility, are you visible about all you are doing to keep your employees safe and protected from COVID and other germs as they return to work?
