First impressions are important, and one of the first things people notice when they enter a building is the flooring. This fact makes keeping carpets clean essential!
Fortunately, you can take several steps to ensure that your commercial carpeting looks great for as long as possible.
1. Try to protect and maintain the carpet's fibers.
Carpet materials must be protected and maintained in order to preserve the original pattern and the fibers' integrity. This can be accomplished by vacuuming daily to remove dirt and debris that can quickly damage the fibers, performing regular deep carpet cleanings, and, most importantly, keeping the area dry. Spilled or tracked-in liquids are carpeting's undoing (see step #2 below). Maintaining the carpet's health and cleanliness of the carpet fibers will keep the carpet looking and feeling newer for a longer period of time.
2. Keep carpets dry.
Water is the most obvious culprit to avoid, and it can sometimes creep in from unexpected places, so keep an eye out for any damp spots. Examine any areas where leaks could go undetected for extended periods of time. Also, if you have carpets next to hardwood flooring, stone, or tile, be aware that cleaning products safely used those surfaces can inadvertently damage the carpet. If cleaning solutions used to clean hard surface floors get on carpeting, the carpet fibers may be irreparably damaged, bleached, or stained, quickly decreasing carpet’s lifespan. Consider putting plastic down on the floor for people to walk on and putting up signs telling people to stay on the plastic for their own health and safety and to protect the floor when chemicals are being used. Protecting carpet from almost any amount and kind of liquid is important if you want it to last a long time.
3. A stich in time...
Better Business Cleaning has been working with carpets and flooring for decades, and we recommend a preventative maintenance strategy. This can include deep cleaning with carpet-healthy products designed to rejuvenate the carpet and extend its life, and vacuuming on a regular basis to keep the fibers standing correctly. Many facility managers do not take these precautions until there is a visible spill or deterioration, at which point it may be too late. By doing preventive maintenance early on in the carpet's lifecycle, a Building Manager can nearly double the amount of time the carpet lasts. This saves money in the long run.
4. Plan ahead when choosing a carpet color.
Darker colors are easier to maintain in appearance than lighter colors, which show stains more quickly. If Building Managers are looking for low-maintenance flooring, they should consider darker colored carpets or non-carpeted flooring options such as stone, hardwood, or laminate. When choosing new commercial flooring products, you should think about how much it will cost to clean and maintain them over time.
Summary
Routine cleaning and preventative floor care strategies make all the difference in the longevity of commercial carpeting and can save thousands of dollars in restoration and replacement costs down the road.
